How to change language of in-line spell check in Opera 10

Opera 10 alpha built is here and it brings with it some amazing features, the new Presto 2.2 engine, a 100/100 in the Acid3 test, support for SVG Web fonts, CSS RGBA and HSLA colour values, the W3C selectors API, and more.

Understanding the need of quality communication, Opera 10 also incorporates an inline spell check option for checking misspellings as you type. So no need to worry about making dreadful spelling mistakes on your corporate forum, Facebook Wall or even your blog.

However users will notice that the default dictionary is US-English.

How to Change the default dictionary?

  • Opera uses OpenOffice dictionary files. Download the package for the dictionary for your choice.
  • Unpack the contents of the dictionary package you downloaded to the Dictionary directory in Profiles folder.
  • Restart Opera to enable changes.

Note: Use the English-OED dictionary instead of the incompatible English-GB dictionary.

My dictionary in OOo is already English UK but Opera is using US. Can’t I just move my UK stuff to Opera somewhere? That link doesn’t really help… directs me to a german download page and the instructions don’t match up with the page.
